With Labor Day just around the corner, many of us are starting to think/worry/panic about what to wear. Relax – putting together a cute, fashionable, yet comfortable, outfit doesn’t have to be a headache - we got you! Sit back, pour yourself a glass of something delicious, and check out our guide on how to dress for a Labor Day gathering.
Dress for the Day, Not the Season
This first tip might sound like those words of wisdom Mom once passed down, but hey, we all know she’s usually right!
With Labor Day at the beginning of September, it’s often thought of as the start of the last days of summer. Most people treat it that way, pulling their favorite summer items out of the closet one final time before switching to the fall collections.
Now before you follow the crowd, it makes sense to check that Mother Nature is on board with your plans. No amount of breezy optimism will bring back summer once it’s passed. If you are already feeling the signs of fall, embrace the change instead of shivering your way through. We want you to be as comfy and fashionable as possible!
Keep it Light
Assuming it is still warm (here’s hoping!), summer staples like a little white dress will serve you well. You can hold on to that summer vibe by choosing a long-sleeve variety, or adding a denim jacket or cardigan to the mix. If a pool is part of the festivities, wearing a bathing suit underneath makes for a quick change when you are ready to jump in.
If the dress isn’t your thing, take one more opportunity to style a pair of jean shorts. No matter the style, jean shorts have a casual, trendy and major fashionable look to them. Look to style a pair with a cute sleeveless tank, or a nice blouse...the options are endless.
Traditionally, wearing white after Labor Day was frowned upon as a fashion faux pas. Most of us are more flexible nowadays, but the occasion is still seen by many as the last chance to don a striking full-white ensemble. Luckily, it’s easy to pick stylish light-colored clothing that is weather appropriate.
How to Accessorize for Labor Day
Accessorizing is a great way to add layers to keep warm when the weather is less than stellar. A lightweight summer scarf is always an easy option, and it adds major style appeal while keeping your neck and shoulders warm.
Sometimes, the fickle climate calls for a quick outfit change. By bringing along a stylish purse, you can instantly enhance your look by carrying a sweater or light jacket to slip on. (Oh, and if that purse happens to be a PortoVino wine purse with some liquid refreshments to share, we are all in!)

The Best Shoes for a Labor Day Picnic
Let’s face it no outfit is complete without the right shoes! We suggest going with a sandal on this one. It really is one of the last times of the season you can show off those nicely pedicured toes. If you’re heading to a relaxed family gathering, then the comfort of flat sandals might win out, but a nice wedge or espadrilles can offer a slightly more sophisticated look.
And there we have it! With your fashion choices all wrapped up, you can really start to relax and look forward to the big day… unless of course you’re hosting! Don’t worry, we have you covered! Take a look at some of our favorite ideas for
